Iron Man 3 (3D Imax) Review

As the title suggests, Iron Man 3 is the 3rd installment in the Iron Man film series & the first film in phase two of The Avengers Marvel films. Following the events of The Avengers (2012) Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey JR) is suffering following the battle in New York. Not being able to sleep & dealing with reoccurring panic attacks,Tony uses all his time to make better models of the Iron Man suit,s. Pepper Pots (Tony,s girlfriend) (Gwyneth Paltrow) maintains the running of Stark Industries, shortly into the story she meets Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) who is looking for an investment for his Extremis program. Tony, trying to get back to his normal life faces another problem, The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). The Mandarin is a terrorist who after attacking major city’s, sets his sights on killing Tony Stark & the Iron Man.

Directed by Shane Black, rather than Jon Favreau (the first two films) he brings a different tone to the film & this series. It is difficult to write a synopsis of this film without reveling a major spoiler. The basic story in Iron Man must battle new villain (The Mandarin),but there is so much more to this film than that. Not being a fan of the first two Iron Man films, i was hoping that the different tone & director would be a welcome change. I believe this film to be Marvel,s Avengers second best film so far (Avengers itself being #1). The film is surprisingly a great mix of action, story & funny moments, similar to Django Unchained (2012) in regards to mixing genres well. The acting from Downey Jr, Kingsley & Pearce are excellent in the leading roles, along with great jobs from Favreau & Cheadle. Downey Jr has a lot of funny moments (mostly with Favreau) but is also great in the action scenes. Kingsley shines in the first half of the film as a menacing terrorist. The action here is amazing, stand outs are the destruction of Tony,s house & the Air Force One scene. This brings me to a point in this film which other Critics & fans alike have different thoughts on. I feel, while it was a bit over the top, it was something quite unexpected & made great sense in the story. The score by Brian Tyler is also an welcome addition. The post converted 3D adds nothing to the experience, while seeing it in Imax makes the action scenes even better. It has its minor problems, the spoiler scenes dialog plus some unanswered questions In saying that this does not prevent the third Iron Man,being the best Iron Man.

Overall Iron Man 3 has amazing action, an interesting story, likable characters & a surprise twist that’s never really been seen in a big budget action movie.

5 Stars
