The highly anticipated reboot of the Superman series, directed by Zack Snyder (300, Dawn Of The Dead), written by David Goyer & produced by Christopher Nolan (Dark Knight Trilogy). The film is a origin story of Superman,s up bringing & discovery of his powers on earth. The film begins on the planet Krypton with Jor-El (Russel Crowe) & his wife Lana (Ayelet Zurer) as they welcome there son Kal-El into the world. Krypton is being destroyed & they both agree to save there son,s life by sending him to earth. General Zod (Micheal Shannon) attempts to prevent this, however he, along with the rest of his followers are frozen on an unknown planet. The film cuts to Kal-El (Henry Cavill) arrival on earth & shows him as an adult travelling across North America, trying to discover his purpose. The film cuts between events in his childhood with his parents on earth (Kevin Costner & Diane Lane) & events taking place as he becomes Superman. While these events are taking place, a reporter at the Daily Planet newspaper Lois Lane (Amy Adams) tries to discover who Kal-El is. Shorty into the film General Zod, escapes & comes to earth to capture Kal-El. This leads to a battle between Kal-El, the United States army & fellow kryptonian,s General Zod & his family.
As mentioned above this is one (if not the most )anticipated films of 2013, so i along with many others had high hopes, does in delivery ?, the simply answer is Yes. The film does have small problems, however there just that (small) & don’t prevent this being one of the best films of the year. The cast is excellent all round, with stand outs Micheal Shannon & Kevin Costner who are both amazing. Costner as Kal-El,s dad on earth displays so much emotion & brings so much to his scenes with young Kal-El trying to find out who he is. Micheal Shannon brings so much to the character of General Zod, he is menacing, has great dialog & at times you can even relate to him & see his way of thinking. Russel Crowe as Jar-El is also excellent & shows he can still bring great performances to the table. The action scenes (while maybe theirs a little to much of them) are still outstanding & shot well, particularly the final battle between Superman & Zod. The films different narrative style is something different & a welcome change from the normal way a story’s told. Writing about outstanding things, the score by Hans Zimmer is adds even more to the action & emotional scenes when needed. The small problems are they could have been a bit less action & Lois Lane seems like a unnecessary character for the most part. Nether of these detract from the films overall presentation however. The 3D (Like most) adds nothing to the film, & seems like a cash grab.
Overall Man Of Steel is everything you hoped to see, great acting (especially from Shannon & Costner) excellent action, unique story telling & an amazing score.
