The 8th Marvel Studies film & the 2nd film in Phase Two. Thor : The Dark World is the sequel to Thor (2011) & The Avengers (2012), the film follows a year after the events of The Avengers as Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is imprisoned on Asgard & Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is defending the kingdom against the other relems. The film opens with an introduction to The Dark Elves & there leader Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), he is in search for a substance known as the Aether to control the galaxy. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) has moved to London along with Dr Erik Selvig (Stellan Skargard) & Darcy Lewis (Kat Denning) to continue her research to find Asgard. While looking for evidence, she discover the Aether hidden within a building, it soon inhabits her body. Thor learns on the Aether & has to team with Loki to prevent Malekith killing Jane & ruling the nine relims.

Prior to Iron Man 3 (2013),  Thor (2011) & The Avengers (2012) where my favorite films within the Marvel cinematic universe. This being the case I was highly looking forward to this Thor sequel, sadly It was quite a disappointment. The film is not terrible but its got some big problems. Firstly the positives : Tom Hiddleston as Loki is excellent & steels every scene he has, proving why he was and still is a great character. Director Alan Taylor (Who worked on Game Of Thrones) does a good job with the old style look on Asgard. Being tilted The Dark World there are some dramatic scenes which work at times. The Problems, are that the main Villains (Malekith & The Other Dark Elves) are just not a believable threat & I never thought they where a serious threat to Thor. There main travel form are ships which look like they came out of the Star Wars or Star Trek universe. I am a fan of the new Star Trek films along with Star Wars, but these just don’t belong in the Marvel Universe. Thor, Avengers & Iron Man 3 all had funny moments that worked within the story & added to the entertainment factor. This film just goes overboard with jokes that are ether not funny or just stupid & campy. The 3D is a waste & does nothing for the experience other that to mark up the ticket prices.

Overall Thor : The Dark World has excellent work from Tom Hiddleston & good action. Yet poor villains, bad comedy & Star Wars/Star Trek elements that just don’t work in this universe.

3/5 Stars
